Position: Director of Operations
Job type: Full-time or part-time, permanent
Location: Work from home with occasional in-person meetings. Edmonton preferred, other locations considered.
Job Description: The organization: Launched in 2016, Progress Alberta is a non-profit organization that advocates for civil rights, workplace democracy, reliable public services, and the dismantling of colonial systems of oppression in Alberta. Since 2019 our full-time focus has been The Progress Report, a web-based journalism platform.
The opportunity: We are seeking a new team member to replace our outgoing executive director, specifically for his fundraising and administration duties. Success in this role would entail not just helping us keep the lights on at the Report, but also growing the organization.
Progress Alberta is a worker-led non-profit. A majority of the board of directors must be workers and the organization is managed collaboratively with its workers. The successful candidate will be expected to participate on this board along with their colleagues.
We are a collective of workers who collaborate to advance our shared political ideals. We are not seeking a candidate who does not share our values. This is not an appropriate role for the apolitical or the politically conservative. Our ideal candidate has well-considered and coherent political values which align with ours, alongside experience in fundraising or managing relationships with stakeholders. Confidence and social skills will be key in this role, which will often be tasked with ‘working the room’ and delivering pitches to potential funders.
Qualifications and requirements
-
The most crucial qualification for this role is previous success in fundraising.
-
Due to the directly political (but non-partisan) nature of our organization, we are not able to consider applicants with values that do not align with ours. Please review our work carefully before applying.
-
Basic tech skills are a necessity as our team frequently coordinates remotely. We will provide some training in the CMS we use (Nationbuilder.)
-
The candidate should demonstrate a general understanding of federal, provincial and municipal politics, how labour unions and labour relations work, and political activism beyond party politics. Applicants from outside Alberta are welcome, we can get you up to speed on the local stuff.
-
Success in this role will require discipline and self-direction, as you will not have a direct superior.
- Existing relationships among Canadian labour or activist networks will be an asset but are not required.
Compensation:
Hours are negotiable. Hourly compensation would be between $28 to $32 an hour.
As the director of operations of a worker-led non-profit, your pay and the pay of your colleagues is up to you and your colleagues. Serious candidates will get a chance to examine our books and current pay rates.
Deadline: Apply by January 15 or earlier
